STATION: Mission Musings [1105.1998]

I've been thinking about a mission statement.. Things like the halloween document get responses from all over the web. What if I sort of "covered" the story? I've been adding quotes from different people to the rant from a few days back.. It might make sense to have just a whole page devoted to the topic, but with a more usable pagename, like /oss/halloween.html.

That's sort of what a presurfer has to do: collect and compile other people's ideas, and contribute their own spin to it. And of course that also means automatically collecting user comments, the way slashdot does. It means making all these references links, even when it's almost 3 in the morning and I don't really feel like it. (so slap my wrist, eh?)

And it means having a focus. I can't expect to cover everything, but I can cover what interests me. Jorn can have his pictures of NASA, etc. Slashdot can have it's hardware and game and other links in addition to what I consider the good stuff. Because it's not about going to the news anymore.

Personalized news isn't about going to excite and getting words that match your keyword. It's about going to a person you trust. Personalized. Each of the current presurfers have their own interests, and they capitalize on them and share those interests. That's why I don't think Jorn and I are competing. Or Bill at whump.com or Raphael at honeyguide. Or the folks at memepool. Heck. 99% of the web doesn't even know we're here yet.

Personally, I'm trying to get my site in order before I think about presurfing as a profession - even a part time one. But it's coming.
