rantelope

One of my goals for today was to spec out the cornerhost knowledge base.

The more I thought about it, the more it started to sound like a full content management system... And the more I thought about that, the more I realized that if I had such a thing, I could do all sorts of things with it.

Of course, I know there are a million content management systems out there, may of them free. But I've wanted to write my own for a long time, and the pieces are already there!

So, next week I'm going to write it. That's going to be my goal. In fact, if I hurry up and finish my goals for this week, I may start even sooner.

Finally, a fun goal that fits in perfectly with my business. :)

hahahaha!!

uh-oh

I guess I'm up for the day. I can't sleep. I crashed around eight last night, woke up around eleven, and haven't had much luck getting back to sleep sense. I'm still up by 10:00 today, but tomorrow morning is going to be a real problem if I'm not careful. I didn't actually say "up by 10" for this week's accountability thing, but that's beside the point. I want to stick to my schedule...

esperanto

A little while ago, I read the kuro5hin article on Esperanto and all the comments. There were some interesting points made about the benefits of learning a conlang. Many people consider it pointless, but quite a few who'd actually learned it chimed in with positive experiences. Someone else brought up the point that a distaste for doing things just for fun is basically a western/puritan tradition, which made me laugh, because it's definitely part of my worldview (I tend to feel guilty for not being productive).

Personally, I'd like to learn another langauge just so that I have another way of thinking about things. I've been learning spanish a little at a time, but it's slow going. Lately, I've spent some of my "flake time" looking at lojban again. I think lojban is more of a mental stretch (that's the point), but Esperanto has far more speakers. (Apparently even Klingon has more speakers than Lojban...)

In fact, Esperanto is much more of a 'network'. People learn it to communicate across cultures. There's even a program where Esperantists host each other when travelling to other countries, which I think is really really cool.

Anyway, someone else in the k5 discussion made a comment about how language is easier to learn when you have people to talk to. In fact, the main esperanto opponent in that discussion kept bringing up that there are so few esperanto speakers that they don't have a community (there are several million esperanto speakers, spread out worldwide).

That got me thinking about how in the US, we think of learning as an individual thing. But language is a group phenomenon. Why not learn it as a group?

My friend Zach is doing great things with teambuilding for personal improvment over at BodyBlog...

Why not a language team?

What do you say? Anyone interested in learning Esperanto or lojban?
